A new lounge setting at Puesta Del Sol at the Fairmont

Aside from Fairmont’s amazing portfolio of dining options (including Frankie’s), we received an invitation to try out something new. A new beautiful setting of a “Latin Lounge” that sits on Khor Al Maqta in Abu Dhabi. No less that a perfect picturesque view of the hotel, Puesta Del Sol, coupled with this beautiful weather, is just the right place for that evening cocktail. Receiving an invitation to try out Fairmont’s new launch of this lounge, we were taken in for a slight shock as to how the hotel seemed to execute this with not many knowing.

Entering a beautiful seating area out on the beach, along with Latin music was one way to show us that we were in for a treat. That along with the beautiful winterly winds , cocktails and ceviche styled food was definitely reassuring that being at Puesta Del Sol was going to be a great time!

Quite the right type of “Lounge Setting” as one would expect, Puesta Del Sol features a tranquil environment that provides views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Along with compfy chairs, the sweet scent of shisha fills the air as you walk through the venue. However, we were quite looking forward to the food that was being served here. Now Ceviche is a type of “small portioned” dish that’s popularly served in parts of Latin America. It has definitely taken a form of favoritism when it comes to the dining scene of the UAE. Quite similar to Spanish Tapas, a ceviche is always easy to eat and well…in other words…quite the perfect accompaniment to that evening cocktail.

While the venue does serve an amazing array of cocktails on the menu, we had to incline towards the food and I certainly have a story to tell there!

The Food

Starting off with a shisha to give us that perfect “Winter Feeling”, we were greeted by the food – bit by bit.

Well its difficult to go wrong with Tortillas, but when you have that with fresh Salsa – it’s just amazing! We also received a lovely plate of baked mussels along with a cherry tomato (sort of salsa). The combination on ingredients was absolutely fresh and lively. The baked mussels were baked and gave an interesting crispy texture to the dish. In my opinion, the whole concept of a Ceviche-styled serving, is absolutely perfect for a place like this. You get a very strong sense of “sharing” and “engaging”.

Well, not many are a fan of Octopus (persé). However, this version of a Ceviche at Puesta Del Sol was so fresh indeed! With a burst of the flavors of the sea in your mouth, I couldn’t resist swiping the whole plate clean! Again, served with a Salsa type of dipping sauce, this dish reminded me of Scallops for some reason. Well I’m not forcing an “Eat it!” if you don’t like octopus, but I’m quite sure the Shrimps alternative of this dish would take your fancy!

Its a Spanish pizza. A “Spanish” pizza. Two very contradictory terms here. However, the chefs at the venue did seem to pull it off by implementing a celebration of Spanish flavors of sundried tomatoes and beef salami! The pizza base itself lacked a bit of crispiness, however, the concept of the dish actually worked! Yes, we did manage to finish this entire plate!

In Sweeter News…

Deserts were absolutely a highlight for this evening. Yes, we always need to sweeten our palate after every meal, don’t we?

Who wouldn’t say no to a plate of warm Churros rolled in sugar along with some chocolate dipping sauce? Absolutely fresh and deep fried (and not oily at all), these Churros were definitely the right way to end a beautiful evening. Predominantly choux pastry, these churros were perfectly crispy on the outside while soft on the inside. Yes, we did mange to finish up this plate!

Again, Creme Brulée comes nearly in all forms of cuisine. Differentiating from another in the type of versions I suppose. This version at Puesta was actually very nice! Perfect crispy topping of burnt sugar (or Brulée) the custard that sat underneath it was delicious! Again, its safe to say that we need wipe up the whole dish!
